Size of crystallite, grain, and particle
A crystalline phase can form during the solidification of the melt, densification of the vapor, crystallization from an amorphous solid, and even recrystallization in a crystalline material. In these transformations, the atoms tend to come together regularly and form a crystal. If the number of atoms, which order in an instant, is sufficient, a nucleus forms and starts to grow. The more atoms join this order, the longer the order. In other words, the order goes from short-term to long-term. This orderly colony of atoms is called “crystallite.” The adjacent crystallites with different crystal orientations come together as they grow and create boundaries. In this state, the crystallite is called “grain,” and the boundary between them is grain boundary.
To distinguish the grain and crystallite, a few things should be considered:
۱. If the grain consists of one phase and the direction of atomic arrangement is completely the same in all of it, that grain is a crystallite.
۲. A grain can consist of two or several phases. For example, a grain with pearlite microstructure consists of two phases of ferrite and cementite. In this case, the grain would not be considered as one crystallite, but consists of a large number of ferrite and cementite crystallites. The grains are recognized by grain boundaries. The grain boundaries can be observed using microscopes. If there is no grain boundary in a material, it is called a single crystal, although it may have many crystallites in different directions.
۳. The grain may consist of one phase, but the crystal orientation at different points is slightly different. For example, when two sub-branches of a dendrite thicken and come together during solidification, there is no guarantee that their crystal orientation will be exactly the same, even though both branches have grown from the same nucleus. In this case, too, the grain consists of more than one crystallite. Analyzing the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) by the method of Debye Scherrer is a way to estimate the crystallite size.
۴. The grains are from one material!
۵. The crystallites are from one phase! The greater the number of crystallites in a given volume, the smaller their size. That is, the order is shorter, so the XRD peaks of that crystallite will be wider. How? When the order is shorter, the volume of the inter-crystallite regions increases. In the region between the crystallites, the atomic distances are slightly different from what we have in the crystallite bulk, so in the X-ray diffraction pattern, noises are created next to the peaks that cause the peak to broaden. In amorphous materials, where the crystalline order is very short, the sharp peak turns into a wide hump.
Powder particles are small pieces of material. Just as a material can consist of single or several grains, particles can also be single crystalline or polycrystalline. The crystallite size is important in the powder technology, especially when researchers mistakenly use the Debye Scherrer method to determine particle size, unaware that what they are measuring is the size of the crystallite, which may be much smaller than the particle size of the powder.
With this explanation, it is clear that reducing the particle size causes the peaks to broaden because breaking a particle into two particles will certainly cause breaking a number of grains and thus crystallites. However, the “peak width sensitivity to particle size” depends on the size of the crystallite. The size of a crystallite can be up to the size of a grain, and the size of grain can be up to the size of a particle.
